And so it begins...

March 12th 4:00pm officially marks the beginning of the 2013-2014 league year.  That means it is time to fire the The Sunday Edge back up.

A few items I want to touch on since my last entry.

- Joe Flacco got rich (6 years 120.6M) and then ate some nuggets.
---  Something just does not sit well with me thinking that the richest contract in NFL history has Joe Flacco's name on it.  Then again what was Baltimore suppose to do?  Flacco had the franchise over his knee and they had to pay him.

-Steven Jackson will not be a Ram in 2013.
--- I can blame him for for voiding the final year of his contract.  There aren't many more good seasons left on those legs and he has yet to suit up for a playoff game.  Everyone seems to think he is going to ATL.

-Michael Turner will not be  a Falcon in 2013.
---Not that he ever had a lot of pop, but he has rushed for 10+ touchdowns in 5 consecutive seasons.  Off the top of my head Peterson is the only other guy who has an active streak of 5+ years of 10+.  He could still be fantasy relevant in the right location.

-KC got a QB.
---KC picking up Alex Smith was a good move.  With no worthy rookie QB to draft overall #1 getting Alex Smith was probably as good as they could have done.  I don't know what the season win total will be on KC this year (my guess is o/u 6) but I will be on the over.  This team was not as bad as their 2-14 record indicated.  Any Reid coming to town wont hurt either.

-Tavon Austin made millions in 4.34 seconds.
---I have been watching this guy make plays for the last 3 seasons.  Through this season there was never any discussion of him being a potential 1st rounder.  After his combine he flew up draft boards.  I have seen him as high as 16 and as low as 27.  As long as he doesn't butcher his pro-day coming up he is going in the first round.  I have spent the last 5 minutes trying to compare him to a current NFL player and the best I could come up with would be a Darren Sproles / Randall Cobb hybrid.  With Percy Harvin leaving Minny I have a feeling the Vikings might be targeting Austin to replace some of that explosion.  With that said I don't think Tavon Austin is even in the same ball-park as Percy Harvin, but I could see them using him in some similar ways.

---I remember this night well.  It was coach Turk's bachelor party in AC.  We were in the Showboat Casino watching Oregon go down to Stanford.  A score update came across the bottom line, we see the score of the WVU/Oklahoma game and then we see a stat that had Tavon Austin having 300+ yards rushing.  Confusion came over us as WVU had not really used Austin as a ball carrier aside from the push pass that Geno perfected.  I just assumed it was a typo.

- Dick Sherman and Darrelle Revis got into a fight via Twitter.  Sherman then went on to bully Skip Bayless on live TV.

--- During the playoffs Sherman annoyed the hell out of me.  I should have prefaced that statement by saying that my $ was against the Seahawks in both playoff games they played and I lost both times, so that had something to do with it I'm sure.  Sherman is the classic guy who you will love if your dollar is behind him, and will hate if it's against him. (think Cam Newton sr. year at Auburn)

-I am sure there are some other noteworthy stories out there, but that brings me up to today.

-Anquan Boldin to the 49ers.
---You know what they say.  If you can't beat your brother--take one of his play-makers.  This now solidifies SF as the toughest to tackle pass catchers in the league (Crabtree/Boldin/Davis).   I really don't think this changes his fantasy value all that much.  I had him as a low end #3 coming into this year and probably would keep him there.

-Percy Harvin to the Seahawks.
---A lot I want to talk about with this one.  First, I think the Seahawks were going to be the trendy selection to represent the NFC in SB48.  This move will help that cause, and anyone who was on the fence in selecting Seattle will now be on board.
---I wonder if anyone doesn't like Percy Harvin?  I really only have a few friends, but anytime his name comes up it is quickly followed with "oh yea I like him."  There is a great deal to like.

Versatile? So in summary we have a 185lb guy that can truck people at the goal line.  A guy who you can flip it to in space make, 5 guys miss and walk into the end zone.  As well as a guy who can take it 100 yards in a flash.  No wonder Peterson wasn't very happy that they couldn't make it work with him.

---I still wish the Patriots would have sent Welker packing and then bring Harvin in to play Welker's role.  As far as fantasy there will be some uncertainty in how the Seahawks will use him.  Is he going to get the 50+ carries he got in 2011? (was on pace for 50+ again in 2012 before he got hurt)  I am going to have a hard time not putting him in the 6-10 range even with the mystery.

Remember a few years ago when the NFC west was a joke?  Call me a square but a SF/SEA NFC championship game seems quite plausible at this point.
